What am I doing? (+ reflections on knowledge)

 Knowledge and learning

Yesterday (Sunday September 26th) we had our first online discussion after the summer break and I was delighted to listen to some amazing thoughts and theories about knowledge, learning and information. I took part of other sessions about the topic in the past but each one has been unique so far. Besides that, here is so much to say and reflect about what is knowledge, how it is built, perceived, chosen, assumed, (un)prepared and imparted.

While listening to the conversation I ended up making a visual map 👇

The map doesn't include every single idea we discussed as sometimes I felt like just listening.
Generally, every time we have a session like this, I feel like I need an other hour just to process all the thoughts that have been shared. That is actually a nice feeling! A feeling of 'feeding' and stimulating my mind.

What am I doing? (Module 3 session)

Today we had a session where some of us shared their research topics and questions, as well as methodologies and expectations.
Unfortunately at that time I just finished at work and had to take public transport to get back home (during rush hour in London!), so I wasn't really able to talk, but thanks to my mobile phone and a pair of earphones I could listen to what some of you are experiencing in their inquiry process and what topics resonate with your practice(s).

What am I doing?
I am investigating effective psychological approaches adopted in technique class (in elite-vocational training) for those students who are considered to be the future of contemporary dance in all its forms.
I am interviewing teachers whose practice links to full-time training, wether they teach contemporary dance technique or ballet technique for contemporary dancers.
I am also bringing up traditional and less traditional pedagogical methods adopted in elite dance training. I am trying to understand wether they have actually evolved in time, and if they change according to different types of institutions around Europe.
By sharing their personal experience, teachers had a one-on-one conversation with me by answering to a number of open and a little less open questions.
Most of the interviews have been done and I am already grateful for all participant's precious help, interest and opinions.
What I am focusing on is mostly goal-setting, motivation and the impact that a teacher's pedagogical approach has on student's mental well-being.
Everything started with a reflection on my own experience as a vocational student to then shift the inquiry from the teacher's perspective and connect it with my practice and its influences. What pedagogical approach has been successful on me as a student and what hasn't? How much from our past experiences is affecting our teaching? And why do we teach in that particular way? How much awareness do we have of student's mental well-being and what is our role in dealing with student's concerns and preparing them for the professional world?

Such topics and questions are still part of my daily thoughts and that is why I am sure this research will not end with in ten weeks but will continue to develop beyond my MA journey.

  1. Hi Laura,
Great to read about your research. I too am doing my research specifically in the area of Higher Education. I must say I'm also looking at pedagogical approaches that have more of a psychological impact. I'm trying to raise awareness of grit/determination as important characteristics for students in full time training. We might be able to share some resources so if you ever need anything just let me know. I'm currently up to my ears with articles/books about mindset and grit. Congrats on completing your interviews so quick. I'm doing mine this week and just starting to feel it's real. Best of luck! I look forward to what your research might bring :)

  2. Hi Laura! Was lovely meeting you on Sunday! :)
I also drew a little mind map on Knowledge - quite similar to yours.
Just sharing it here, in case it can interest anyone...

  3. Hi Laura,
Oooohhhh, this sounds wonderful! Your area of research is so relevant, in my opinion. I actually touched on some flavours of what you mentioned in my AOLs. I'm also very interested in growth (or flexible) mindset versus fixed mindset. Have you come across that? It lines up with what you wrote about goal setting, motivation and is applicable to both student and teacher (pedagogical practices).
I'm looking forward to hearing all about this at the end of the term.
    Good luck with everything!
    Natalie :)

  4. One of my core literatures is "Mindset" by Carol Dweck which describes the fixed and growth mindsets. I'm sure you all came across it but just in case you haven't it's a good one to look into and you can find the free audiobook on YouTube ;)

  5. Hi Laura,

Ben here from Module 2. Your project sounds really interesting, and I am having similar ideas for my inquiry. I am particularly interested in feedback - its usefulness, appropriateness, accessibility, and how this can/should change. Your focus on motivation and perhaps bridging the gap to the professional dance world is a vast topic and really interesting.

    Best, x

  6. Hi Laura,
Your project sounds really fascinating and really looking forward to knowing more about it!
My project is on Being a Dance Teacher: Roles, Responsibilities and the environment of learning, and as you have mentioned a point (one of the many) I am also focusing and researching about is how the teacher is responsible to guide students towards a positive mind goal-setting, strong motivation and all these throughout the most appropriate pedagogical environment.

    best wishes, Maria

  7. Hi Laura, when i have heard few months ago about your master project, the title, I was really delighted and I knew that this would be very attentive field of research. Since I am studying somatic I can not not noticed that your work also bring some somatic elements and tools such as listening, observing, reflecting, including awareness in your research, dialogue,... and that is great start to achieve understanding and turn knowledge, experience into (deeper )insight. I am really eager to hear more from your research, i am all ears too, haha. But, I wish you and your project the best. Explore as much as you can...Psychology is like an ocean. Deep, Vast, Wide. :)
